Join us for an in-depth webinar on Assembly Bill 1955 (AB 1955), the “Support Academic Futures and Educators for Today’s Youth Act” (“SAFETY Act)”, signed into law on July 15, 2024. This pivotal legislation prohibits local education agencies (“LEA”) from enacting or enforcing any policy, rule, or administrative regulation that requires an employee or contractor to disclose any information related to a pupil’s sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression to any other person without the pupil’s consent unless otherwise required by state or federal law. The bill also prohibits retaliatory or adverse actions towards school employees on the basis that the employee supported a pupil in exercising their rights to privacy and self-determination.  AB 1955 also mandates the California Department of Education (CDE) to develop or update resources aimed at supporting parents, guardians, and families of LGBTQ pupils to foster a positive school and community climate.

In this session, our expert panel will explore:

  • The legislative intent and key provisions of the SAFETY Act
  • How AB 1955 impacts educators, students, and families
  • How AB 1955 impacts current existing policies related to the disclosure of students’ sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression
  • How AB 1955 impacts pending litigation
  • Best practices for compliance
  • Collaborative strategies for developing effective resources with LGBTQ pupils, parents, guardians, and families
  • Practical steps for schools to implement and integrate these resources

Stay informed and equipped to support the well-being of LGBTQ students and their families.
