Course-based independent study was designed to create an alternative method of attendance accounting for independent study. However, up to now, it is an option that we have rarely seen used by charter schools. However, with the onerous rules set forth by AB 130 and AB 167, course-based independent study might be an attractive choice for some charter schools as it front-loads the paperwork requirements in exchange for eased ongoing requirements, including easier to follow attendance accounting and tiered re-engagement strategies.
