Independent Study 101

September 22, 2021

This webinar is intended as a crash course on independent study compliance. Due to AB 130 and AB 167 in response to the ongoing pandemic and multiple student and staff quarantines, the majority of charter schools in the state are now using independent study as an instructional methodology.

The great thing about independent study is that it allows an LEA to collect ADA even when a student is unable to attend in-person instruction. The downside to independent study is the persnickety legal requirements which can make legally compliant implementation and documentation very challenging, thus exposing an LEA to a possible loss of apportionment due to an audit exception.

While we do not yet have an audit guide for the 2021-22 school year, a charter school can insulate itself from possible audit exceptions and loss of apportionment by fully understanding and documenting compliance with all of the legal requirements. In this webinar, we will walk through the path an auditor will likely take in conducting an audit of independent study for the 2021-22 school year.

We will discuss:

  • Options for documentation of each of the requirements
  • Practical solutions to those areas of law that continue to have some ambiguity

Our goal in offering this webinar is to help protect charter schools from any loss of ADA when they are working so hard to educate their students during this incredibly challenging year.
