Overview

Chastin Pierman has exclusively represented charter schools in California since 2005. Chastin’s practice covers all aspects of labor and employment law, including serving as a negotiator for school boards throughout California. Chastin frequently works before California’s Public Employment Relations Board in all matters related to unions and charter schools, in particular responding to union organizing campaigns, defense of Unfair Practice Charges, and impasse matters. Chastin has also served as chief negotiator on many of the first labor agreements for charter schools in California.

In addition to defending charter schools in Superior and Appellate court matters, Chastin frequently works before the California Division of Labor Standards Enforcement, Department of Labor, Department of Fair Employment & Housing, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and other employment related agencies. She also regularly handles complex employment and related matters, including employee discipline proceedings, wage and hour issues, wrongful termination claims, employee leaves of absence, disability accommodation, layoffs, investigations, grievances, employment contracts, Brown Act compliance, policy development, STRS/PERS issues, and whistleblower retaliation.

Chastin is a featured speaker and regularly provides statewide training on labor relations and employment best practices, as well as legal hot topics including sexual harassment prevention, professional boundaries, and religion in public schools. She has served as a guest lecturer for the California Charter Schools Association, the Association of Personalized Learning Schools & Services, and the CSU Dominguez Hills Charter and Autonomous Public Leadership Academy (CASLA Program on Employment and Labor Law).
